I have leased address space before but always let the provider handle
Hi everyone. I have leased address space before but always let the provider handle the routing side, and this time I am doing it myself. I have the LOA in hand and my upstream says they need it before they will accept the announcement. What I do not know is the actual sequence: do I create the route object first, announce and then register, or does it not matter? I would rather not learn this by black holing a customer range on a Friday afternoon. This is going live for a paying customer, so I would rather ask a basic question here than break something in production.
Do not learn it on a Friday, you are right about that. Sequence that works: register the route object in the registry database first, send the LOA to your upstream and wait for them to confirm the filter update, then announce. Announcing before the object exists gets you filtered by anyone doing RPKI or IRR validation, which these days is most people. Also create the ROA if the holder allows it, otherwise expect invalid states downstream. We lease through InterLIR Global https://interlir.global/ , and they handled the object side on their end. Verify from an external looking glass before you tell anyone it is live. Tip: keep a copy of the LOA somewhere your on call engineer can find it at 3am, not just in your own inbox.
