Why is it better to play CS 1.6 through the launcher?

After a very long break, I recently decided to play Counter-Strike 1.6 again. The last time I played was before CS 2 was released, and I played CS:GO. Now, I want to go back to the classic. I heard that many people recommend downloading launcher versions rather than using Steam. So now im  curious anout the differences. Yesterday, I visited the csget website, one of the sites where you can download Counter-Strike . According to their website, their build comes with a pre-configured settings file, FPS optimization, client protection, and anti-cheat compatibility. There are also some other features, like HD models. But how is this different from the Steam version? I haven’t read the specifics on Steam yet, but I’ve seen the game's page. If the game is available on Steam, then it should be optimized for modern systems and hardware. So why do people choose other options?
